Why this DNC Refuses to Release their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

The action by the Democratic National Committee to block the public viewing of its own post-election analysis concerning the 2024 election appears shocking but not surprising. Averse to unpleasant candor, the DNC operates closer to a PR firm rather than an electoral entity committed to cultivating local power to secure victories.

A Culture of Conformity

Reluctant to depart from the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has stayed within that legacy throughout this past year. Releasing such a report could have demonstrated whether the leadership actually want to encourage public discourse about the strategic failures that enabled Donald Trump to return to the White House. However, the committee is acting as if there is little to be learned following the stunning loss of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it becomes a sideline issue from our fundamental goal," a rationale reportedly given for withholding the report.

Key Issues an Autopsy Could Have Examined

An autopsy report of substance would confront key points of failure. These include:

  • Voter Disengagement: Losing of millions of voters who voted for the Democratic ticket in 2020 was decisive in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
  • The Choice to Run: The stubborn insistence by the incumbent to seek re-election, and a very late exit, is seen by some as robbing the party's base the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Abandoning Core Democratic Voters: During a time of inflation, the campaign is criticized for ceding to elite contributors and not managing to challenge the role of corporate greed.
  • A Foreign Policy Factor: The failure to reconsider a policy position concerning a major international conflict is cited as losing significant blocs, particularly with youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Young Voter Allegiance: Research shows a major decline of support for the party from voters aged 18-29.

A Pattern Shunning Scrutiny

This refusal is consistent with a longstanding habit of sidestepping hard truths. It echoes an episode in which the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Washington went along with an incumbent's decision for running for re-election until a catastrophic public debate performance forced an exit.

At the same time, large majorities of Democratic voters were consistently telling researchers of their opposition to that candidate to seek re-election.

Campaign Spending Questions

A substantive autopsy might also probe issues about where money went, such as how much money flowed to high-priced advisors as well as advertising contractors over the course of a campaign that burned through an enormous amount in a short period.

The Underlying Issue

At its core, the blockage regarding the analysis is symptomatic of an allegiance toward the established hierarchy who engineered an unsuccessful electoral effort. The signal for ordinary supporters – including countless dedicated activists – appears to be that they do not have a right to know what the insiders claim to have learned based on a report based on feedback from all states.

A political entity incapable to critically review its mistakes finds it difficult to escape the pattern that proved so beneficial to the winning candidate.
